What Is IDD Therapy Spinal Decompression?

IDD Therapy (Intervertebral Differential Dynamics) is the leading form of non-surgical spinal decompression. It gently but effectively relieves pressure on problematic spinal discs while improving mobility and supporting long-term healing.

Using the Accu-SPINA system — globally recognised as the gold standard — IDD Therapy allows us to decompress a specific spinal level, something traditional traction could never do.

How does Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Work?

  • You lie comfortably on a motorised treatment couch that moves from vertical to horizontal.
  • Special ergonomic harnesses connect the affected area of your spine to the machine.
  • Computer-controlled, precisely measured distraction forces gently draw apart the vertebrae.
  • This reduces pressure on a bulging or herniated disc and eases irritation of nearby nerves.

By decompressing (taking pressure off) an injured or bulging/herniated disc and gently working the soft tissues, we can ease pain, improve mobility in the spine and allow the body's natural healing mechanisms to operate more efficiently.

The goal is to work stiff ligaments and tight muscles, help the body to retract a disc bulge and to help restore function.

Sessions on the machine last around 25–26 minutes, with heat therapy beforehand and cooling afterwards. Patients find the treatment comfortable, so much so that many actually fall asleep.

Conditions That Respond Well to IDD Therapy

  • Herniated or Bulging Discs
  • Sciatica & Nerve Pain
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Facet Joint Syndrome
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Pinched nerves
  • Chronic low back or neck pain
  • Mobility loss due to stiffness or disc compression

If you have symptoms in your legs or arms, or you've been told surgery might be your "next step", IDD Therapy may offer a safer and far less invasive route.

What are the Benefits of IDD Therapy for Disc Problems and Sciatica

Patients who complete a course of IDD Therapy commonly report:

  • Less pain and less nerve irritation - Sharp, radiating, or "electric" pain often eases as pressure lifts off the nerve.
  • Improved mobility & flexibility - Bending, walking, sitting and getting up usually become easier and less guarded.
  • Better sleep and daily comfort - As symptoms settle, the body relaxes and recovery improves.
  • Confidence in your back again - A major focus is restoring trust in your spine so you feel capable and secure.
  • Long-term improvement - Research and clinical outcomes show sustained improvement in many patients who previously plateaued with standard care.

What to Expect From a Course of Treatment

Back and neck problems that have built up over months or years need time and repetition to improve. IDD Therapy isn't a "quick fix", it is a structured, progressive treatment programme.

Typical treatment plan

  • Up to 20 sessions over 4–6 weeks
  • Each session includes heat therapy → IDD session (25–26 mins) → cooling
  • Gradual increases in decompression force as your body adapts
  • Gentle, personalised rehabilitation to support long-term results

This structured approach is what helps people experience meaningful and lasting change.

A message from our Director, Jamie Dearing

"People often come to us feeling uncertain and exhausted after months of discomfort. IDD Therapy gives us a precise and highly targeted way to help those people — especially when a particular disc or spinal level simply isn't recovering. By decompressing and mobilising the exact area causing the trouble, we can help restore function and allow the body to heal naturally. Our goal is simple: to help you move comfortably again and get back to the life you want to lead."

Frequently Asked Questions About IDD Therapy at Central Oxford Osteopathy

What happens at your first appointment?

We take a full medical history and assess your suitability for IDD Therapy. If appropriate, you'll have your first session on the machine the same day.

Is the treatment safe?

Yes. Treatment is gentle and controlled, with an emergency stop button — rarely used — that brings the machine to a smooth halt.

Is IDD Therapy painful?

No. Forces are applied comfortably, and many people fall asleep. Mild muscle soreness can occur early on (similar to beginning exercise), and settles quickly.

What should I wear?

You remain fully clothed — trousers or other comfortable clothing is ideal.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, you're welcome to have a companion in the treatment room.

Should I bring an MRI?

If you have one, please bring it. If not, we can advise whether one is appropriate.

How long is each treatment?

About 45 minutes in total: heat therapy → IDD → cooling.

How many treatments will I need?

This varies by severity and duration, but most long-term issues require a structured course of up to 20 sessions.

Why is a treatment programme of treatments necessary?

Chronic spinal issues involve stiffness, dehydration of discs, and restricted movement. These need repeated, progressive decompression — similar to how exercise requires repetition for lasting change.

How much is IDD Therapy treatment?

From £85 per session, depending on the programme.

Is IDD Therapy the same as spinal decompression?

IDD Therapy is an advanced, targeted form of decompression with additional oscillation/mobilisation built in — making it more precise and more effective than traditional traction.

What is the difference between IDD Therapy and traction?

Traction pulls the whole spine generally; IDD is unique in that it targets a single spinal level with controlled angles and forces.

Do I need a GP referral?

Not usually. You can book directly unless your insurer requires one.

Why does the treatment couch tilt upright?

This avoids the need for twisting when getting on/off the machine and provides a gradual return to weight-bearing after your treatment.

Can I still exercise?

Advice and personalised exercises are provided once your body has adapted to IDD Therapy treatment.

Can I have IDD Therapy after surgery?

In many cases, yes — provided it has been at least six months, and there are no spinal implants.

Will a spinal injection help my pain?

At Central Oxford Osteopathy we don't offer spinal injections. Injections can reduce inflammation temporarily, but do not decompress discs or improve segment mobility. They are not a long-term solution by themselves.

Ready to take your next step?

If you're tired of living around your pain, IDD Therapy may be the turning point you've been looking for. Experience less pain, improved mobility and flexibility, better sleep and the confidence to return to your normal activities. Don't hesitate—start your journey to lasting pain relief today.
